Amritsar is a city in the northwestern Indian state of Punjab, 28 kilometers from the border with Pakistan.
At the center of its walled old town, the gilded Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib) is the holiest gurdwara (religious complex) of
the Sikh religion. It’s at the end of a causeway, surrounded by the sacred Amrit Sarovar tank (lake), where pilgrims bathe.
These popular places to visit in Amritsar are on everyone's must-see lists :
Golden Temple :
The Harmandir Sahib, famous in the world as the Golden Temple, is Sikhism’s holiest shrine,
visited by millions
of pilgrims and tourists from all over the world.
The temple's architecture is beautiful beyond imagination and the serene sarovar that surrounds the temple, the holy lake that is
believed to consist of Amrit or holy water, adds to the glory
of the temple complex. Harmandir Sahib also houses the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy text of Sikhism.
Jallianwala Bagh:
Jallianwala Bagh is a public garden in Amritsar famous for one of the most
tragic yet landmark events in the history of India. This is where the Amritsar Massacre of 1919 took place.
The British Army soldiers upon receiving orders from General Dyer opened fire on a huge, unarmed gathering of men, women and
children on April 13, 1919.
There is a well inside Jallianwala Bagh into which many people including children jumped to save themselves from the firing.
The garden also houses a memorial built in honour of the massacre victims. The portion of the wall with bullet marks
along with the well is preserved as a memorial. A light and sound show is hosted here every evening.
Durgiana Temple:
An important Hindu temple situated in the city of Amritsar, Durgiana Temple is
devoted to Goddess Durga. It is also known as the Lakshmi Narayan Temple and was built during the 16th century. Similar to the
sarovar in Golden Temple,
there is also a water tank or lake surrounding the main temple construction.
Wagah Border:
This popular event takes place every evening before sunset. Soldiers of Indian Border
Security Force, and Pakistan Rangers perform this ceremony at the border. This electrifying ceremony begins with a booming parade
by the soldiers and ends with a lowering of flags on both sides. As soon as the sun sets, the border gates are opened and one soldier
from each side comes forward and shakes hand with the other along with folding of flags.
The Wagah Border Parade is truly a wonderful spectacle worth attending.
Hall Bazaar:
Offering electronic items, ornaments, best quality books, handicrafts and
ready-made garments, Hall Bazaar is famous for its Mughal style gate,
complete with a giant clock with caption "Amritsar - Sifti Da Ghar".
Shri Ram Tirth Temple:
The Shri Ram Tirth Temple, located near Amritsar city,
was built to honour the birthplace of Luva - Kusha, twins of Rama and Sita. Constructed in lime yellow stone,
the temple dates back to the epic of Ramayana where Sita was given in the Ashram of Balamiki after being abandoned by Rama.
The battle of Ram's Ashwamedha force with Luv-Kush is said to have taken place here. The gurukul of the twins,
situated in the temple compound, is regarded as an architectural wonder by pilgrims.
